Haw Frost Shawl Cardigan

Haw frost is thick and fluffy and looks like snow has fallen ... this yarn reminded me of that especially with the metallic threads. Instructions and pattern below.

Materials

10 x 50g Mohair (88m per 50g) - any mohair that is roughly the same length per 50g should work similarly. 500g was sufficient to produce a shawl cardigan with 3/4 sleeves.

I used Charisma Luxury Fashion Mohair Gold Award in Winter White with metalic threads in blue, silver, gold and pink.

  • 74% mohair
  • 13% wool
  • 9% nylon
  • 4% metalic

7.00mm hook

Sizing

Finished size: one size UK 12 - 20 (US 10 - 18) and easily adjusted for larger sizes simply by adding more rows where indicated.

Dimensions:

Click here for full size diagram.

Tension

Peak to peak of pattern - 16cm

2 rows = 4cm

Pattern

Put a small amount of yarn to one side to create chain for armholes.

RIGHT FRONT

Foundation Chain: 96 chain

Row 1: 3ch (acts as 1st tr throughout), tr into 4th ch from hook, *8 tr, sk 2ch, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr)* repeat from * to * to last 9ch, 8tr, 2tr into last ch.

Row 2 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Repeat row 2 three more times (= 5 rows in total to this point).

Row 6 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Row 7 (filet row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *4 x (1ch, sk 1 stitch, tr), sk 2 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), 2tr into last stitch.

Repeat rows 6 & 7, seven more times.

ADJUST AT THIS POINT - add more repeats of rows 2 & 3 if needed and write down total number of rows.

Row 21 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch. DO NOT CAST OFF.

CREATE ARMHOLE

Join spare yarn to the 2nd dip from the edge - roughly 10 in from edge.

29 ch - spans one peak and one trough (1 1/2 pattern repeats).

Join yarn to 2nd peak from point where you joined the yard and cast off - roughly 13 in from the other edge.

BACK

Row 22 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, 8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row, 8tr, sk 1 stitch and 1ch from attached chain, 9tr along attached chain, 2ch, 9tr along chain, sk 2 ch, 8tr along chain, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space where chain is re-attached, 8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Row 23 (filet row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *4 x (1ch, sk 1 stitch, tr), sk 2 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row*repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), 2tr into last stitch.

Row 24 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Repeat rows 23 & 24 twelve times - finishing with a solid row. DO NOT CAST OFF.

ADJUST AT THIS POINT - add more repeats of rows 23 & 24 if needed and write down total number of rows.

CREATE 2nd ARMHOLE

Join spare yarn to the 2nd peak from the edge - roughly 13 in from edge. MAKE SURE THIS MATCHES THE POINT WHERE YOU ATTACHED THE YARN FOR THE FIRST ARMHOLE.

29 ch - spans one peak and one trough (1 1/2 pattern repeats).

Join yarn to 2nd trough from point where you joined the yard and cast off - roughly 10 in from the other edge.

LEFT FRONT

Row 51 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, 8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row, 8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row, sk first ch on attached chain, 8tr along attached chain, sk 2 ch, 9tr along chain, 2ch, 9tr along chain, sk last of chain, sk 1 stitch, *8 tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row, 8tr, sk 2 stitches* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Row 52 (filet row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *4 x (1ch, sk 1 stitch, tr), sk 2 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row*repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 4 x (tr, sk 1 stitch, 1ch), 2tr into last stitch.

Row 53 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Repeat rows 52 & 53 seven times - finishing with a solid row.

ADJUST AT THIS POINT - add more repeats of rows 53 & 53 if needed to match number of rows you used for the right front (remember there is one more row left to do).

Row 68 (solid row): 3ch, 1tr into same place as ch, *8 tr, sk 2 stitches, 8tr, (tr, 2ch, tr) into 2ch space from previous row* repeat from * to * to last 9 stitches, 8tr, 2tr into last stitch.

Repeat row 68 four more times.

Cast off.

Sew in ends.

AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE A SLEEVELESS SHAWL CARDIGAN - the shorter top edge is the collar; the front pieces cross-over and drape ... fasten with a brooch or pin.

SLEEVES

Join thread at bottom point of armhole.

Row 1: 1ch and 1dc into same place, *3ch, sk 2 stitches/chain, 1dc* repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches/chain, 1 ch, tr into first dc of this row. By counting the joining point at top and bottom points of armholes as a stitch, you should be able to create 20 loops around the armhole edge.

Row 2: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc over tr from previous row, *5ch, 1dc into nxt loop from previous row* repeat from * to * to last loop, 2ch, tr into first dc of this row.

Repeat row 2 four more times.

Row 7: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc over tr from previous row, *2ch, 1dc into nxt loop from previous row* repeat from * to * to last loop, 2ch, ss to first dc of this row. This row acts as a 'locking' row and stops the sleeves from billowing out. Gently go round and make sure that the dc of each loop is central and stretch fabric lengthways to remove any bunching of the previous row and stretch out the diamonds formed by the loops.

AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE A SHORT SLEEVED CARDIGAN.

Row 8: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc into dc of previous row, *5ch, 1dc into dc from previous row* repeat from * to * to last dc, 2ch, tr into first dc of this row.

Row 9: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc over tr from previous row, *5ch, 1dc into nxt loop from previous row* repeat from * to * to last loop, 2ch, tr into first dc of this row.

Repeat row 9 three more times.

Row 13: Turn work.

AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE A ELBOW-LENGTH SLEEVED CARDIGAN.

Row 14: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc into dc of previous row, *5ch, 1dc into dc from previous row* repeat from * to * to last dc, 2ch, tr into first dc of this row.

Row 15: Turn work. 1ch and 1dc over tr from previous row, *5ch, 1dc into nxt loop from previous row* repeat from * to * to last loop, 2ch, tr into first dc of this row.

Repeat row 15 three more times

Row 19: Turn work.

AT THIS POINT YOU HAVE A 3/4-LENGTH SLEEVED CARDIGAN.

Repeat 14 - 19 if you want a long-sleeved cardigan.

SLEEVE EDGING

Finishing

Sew in all ends.

OPTIONAL - join thread to top corner and finish top edge (long edge) with one or more rows of tr - repeat for the bottom edge. You will need 50g extra to do this.
